This class is designed for anyone interested in family history research. The instructor will teach you about genealogical principles and ethics, research tools, records and their use. Students in this class will learn how to research, organize, and evaluate their findings. Also included will be newspaper sources as well as records including vital, court, church, immigration, military, cemetery and burial, probate and land. The Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) will also be discussed.
Derek began researching his own family when he was only 13 years old in 1974. He is an active expert on Ancestry.com. His specialty areas include computer genealogy, Civil War and New England research. He is a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Association of Professional Genealogists. Derek graduated from Boston University with certification in genealogy and is currently an online coordinator for the ProGen program.

Janis writes “The Mouse Trap” for Sylvania Advantage. She is the owner of Ohio Computer Training which focuses on group as well as individual training. Janis also makes house calls and gives a senior discount.

Pat will talk about how this writing first began, then go into the different styles of writing and how they were incorporated into each of the nationalities including Asia, the Muslim countries, and Europe. In addition writing was often embellished with decorative art. As a result this class will also be hands on. Students will be shown how to draw their own design based on their religious background.

Week 1: Focus on what makes up the earth’s crust. Learn the differences between elements, minerals, and various types of rocks. Learn about characteristics of minerals and how to identify them. Minerals common to Ohio will be discussed. Participants will examine a variety of specimens.
Week 2: The instructor will discuss the history of geologic formations in Ohio, ranging from prehistoric fresh and saltwater beds to glaciers, swamps, and forests. Learn what mineral deposits were left behind and what uses they have had in Ohio’s past and today. Materials will be provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geologic Survey.
Week 3: Ohio has vast deposits of fossils. Sylvania is internationally known for Devonian and Ordovician sea bed fossils such as trilobites, brachiopods and crinoids. Ohio and the fossils found at selected locations will be studied. The instructor will show specimens.

The history of the British Isles is usually studied from the perspective of England; however, we should also consider the histories of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in order to have a complete understanding of these historical events. In this class you will look at major historical time periods from the perspective of the Celtic nations in the British Isles, as well as discussing other parts of Europe who also share Celtic heritage. Topics to be discussed include The Tudor Age, the British Civil Wars in the 1600s, efforts at unifying the British Isles under English Leadership, the emigration of Celtic peoples from Britain, and the more recent resurgence of Celtic identity.

As you fly over the Midwest and west, you’ve probably looked out your airplane window and noticed patterns, squares, and lines in the earth below. Have you ever wondered where they came from? Why are they in those particular shapes? A thousand years from now, will some future civilization compare this work to that of the mound builders, wondering what they signify? In this class you will study the development of land measurement in America, beginning with the Articles of Confederation, the Northwest Ordinance and leading to precision farming from 18th to 21st Century technology. Lab activities will include land measuring and geo-caching.

THE UNITED NATIONS: Its Place in Today’s World

This course will deal with the purposes and principles of the United Nations, focusing on the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice and the Trusteeship Council. Students will learn about the structure of the U.N., its principles and its methods for peaceful settlements of disputes and enforcement action. Limitations of the U.N. will also be discussed.
