Livingston named 9th President of Lourdes University

David J. Livingston, PhD, Vice President for Advancement at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA, has been appointed as the 9th President of Lourdes University. After conducting a search which garnered candidates from 24 states and Canada, Dr. Livingston was selected unanimously by Lourdes University, its sponsor The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, and the institution’s Board of Trustees. He will begin his role as President on July 1, with an inauguration planned during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Dr. Livingston has been in his current position with Mercyhurst University since 2008, and has served the institution in various capacities since 1997. Prior to joining the Mercyhurst community, he taught religious studies at both the high school and college level in Illinois and Tennessee.

“Though we had a talented group of candidates in our presidential search, Dr. Livingston’s experience in education truly resonated with our community,” shares Sr. Mary Jon Wagoner, Congregational Minister for the Sisters of St. Francis. “His understanding of both the traditional and non-traditional student population, and accomplishments in institutional growth are what ultimately made him the best fit as Lourdes’ new President.”

Understanding the student
One of Dr. Livingston’s greatest gifts is his deep understanding of the needs of various student populations. As an adult learner in a doctoral program while also raising a young family, Dr. Livingston lived the life of a non-traditional student, and recognizes their needs and the strong demand on their time. Like Lourdes University, Mercyhurst’s student population is similar in both size and breadth. In 2012, Mercyhurst welcomed approximately 795 new undergraduates, including 680 traditional-age freshmen as well as 145 new adult undergraduates and 170 graduate students. On an undergraduate level, as Department Chair of Mercyhurst’s Department of Religious Studies, Dr. Livingston worked to develop a study abroad program and took students on 4 trips to England, Ireland, and Italy. The program was such a great success, that today it sees more than 100 students a year studying abroad and has resulted in Mercyhurst opening an international campus in Dungarvan, Ireland.

Growing an institution
Dr. Livingston also possesses a keen understanding of what it takes to expand an institution, in a caring and strategic way. As an academic leader, he implemented a program which reduced the required number of faculty teaching assignments for those engaged in research. Additionally, he developed a program for faculty student research and student research assistants. In his role as Vice President for Advancement, Dr. Livingston raised funds for Mercyhurst’s new $10.5 million dollar academic building, and oversaw the building’s construction from inception to conclusion last summer. He has managed the institution’s current capital campaign, and raised more the $33 million (2-years ahead of schedule) of the $50 million goal. Dr. Livingston also successfully increased alumni giving from 15% to 23% and increased average yearly contributions to the University by more than 80%.

Education and accomplishments
Dr. Livingston holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Augustana College, a master’s degree in theology from Loyola University, and a PhD in theology from Vanderbilt University. He serves on the Board of Corporators at Hamot Hospital and on the Board of Directors as Advancement Committee Chair for the Asbury Woods Nature Center.

A nature and sports enthusiast, Dr. Livingston enjoys spending his free time outdoors - either gardening, kayaking, or running. Joining him as part of the Lourdes community, will be his wife Joan who works as a family therapist, and their children Matt, who is finishing his final year of law school at Columbia University, and Sara, who will graduate from Dennison this spring and will join Chicago’s Teach for America.

Rooted in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, Lourdes University offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 academic majors as well as graduate degrees in business, education, liberal arts, nursing, organizational leadership and theology. Community outreach programs include the Appold Planetarium, the Center for Science Education & the Environment, Lifelong Learning, and Theater Vision. A member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Lourdes students can also compete in a variety of men and women’s sports. Drama Society members Megan Carter, a senior majoring in Criminal Justice, and Tim Robinson, a junior majoring in Early Childhood Education, were named the first recipients of the scholarship and will receive $250 each for spring semester.

The scholarship is the result of a friendship that has developed between Ramsdell, Director of Graduate Admissions and Drama Society Advisor, and Wellington (Rocky) Roemer III, President and CEO of Roemer Insurance. “Last spring I was seriously injured in an accident, and Keith came to my aid,” said Roemer. Following that initial encounter, their paths crossed several times before Ramsdell shared his passion for theatre and the Drama Society with Roemer who decided to fund the endowment along with his uncle, Tom Roemer. Since then, the endowment has grown to over $11,000 with contributions coming from several additional donors all wanting to support students active in theatre at Lourdes.

Named for Ramsdell’s late mother, the idea for the scholarship came from his desire to honor her memory. “When Rocky and I first discussed the Drama Society's goal of establishing a theatre scholarship, I mentioned that my wife and I had initially seeded the fund after my mom passed away a couple years ago. She always supported my efforts in the theatre,” Ramsdell stated. “Much to my surprise, he offered to name the scholarship after her.” The scholarship also carries the name of Roemer Insurance, the family business started by Roemer’s grandfather in 1934.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students can major in any discipline but they must be actively involved in the Drama Society and be members of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society. Candidates must have a minimum of 75 points, earned through their involvement in the various shows produced by the Drama Society, plus they must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.

For more information on the Lourdes University Drama Society or the Roemer Insurance – Janice L. Seventeen students took part in the trip which is part of Lourdes’ MBA curriculum. The program requires students to complete an international immersion experience.

“Lourdes’ MBA program is the only one in the region to offer this type of opportunity for its students. This particular trip was an extraordinary experience for anyone interested in the business dimensions of a major international event like the Olympics,” shares Dean Ludwig, PhD, Dean of the College of Business & Leadership. "The Olympics is an international event with a 10 billion dollar budget that involves tight time frames, intense planning, incredible logistics, and multi-layered marketing. It has ripple effects for business throughout the host economy, and well beyond that. All the speakers we visited emphasized London’s strategies of sustainability and legacy before, during and after the Olympics for the neighborhoods and the facilities.”

The trip began with a private tour of the Olympic Village and the surrounding area conducted by Joan Hoad, Chair of the London 2012 Blue Badge Guides Committee. Students learned about the rejuvenation of the previously depressed East Stratford area that took place during the past seven years, the construction of the Olympic Village venues and an adjacent Westfield Shopping Mall (now the largest in Europe), and the intense security requirements involved. Additionally, they learned about the partnerships and collaborations between government, international and local Olympic committees.

In conjunction with the exploration of the Olympic Village, students met with the owner of a multi-generation family business that was at first displaced by and later took advantage of the construction of the Olympic Village. Lance Foreman, Managing Director of Foreman Fish Island, is an entrepreneur whose land and operation were seized for the construction of the Olympic Stadium. For generations, Foreman’s firm has produced a world-renown line of smoked Scottish salmon. He shared his story of painfully but successfully “fighting city hall” for a nearby site for his business that could be acquired at a reasonable price. Today, Foreman Fish Island is only a few hundred yards from the Olympic Stadium--closer than any commercial business has ever been to an Olympic venue. Foreman is taking advantage of his new view by serving as a hub for corporate hospitality during the games.

Students were introduced to the complexity of Olympic planning by Jackie Brock-Doyle, Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). Doyle served as Communications Director for the Sydney Olympics and was retained by the London Olympic Committee shortly after they won the bid for the 2012 Games (in 2005). She explained the use of the logos, the plans for communications, and the coordination of information about transportation. She described efforts to involve the whole of Great Britain to make them feel that the games belonged to them, not just London. She introduced the development of the mission statement for London 2012 and the plans for “dressing the city” with the Olympic rings and communications which was not legally allowed until after the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (which was also being staged during the immersion).

The Lourdes MBA students also met with Jeremy Fern, Head of City Affairs and Economic Development for the City of London, who explained the city’s responsibilities and plans, including the details behind security, police protection and transport across all the venues, many of which are in the neighborhoods of the city and on the outskirts. Additionally, he emphasized the goal to make London 2012 the most sustainable Olympics in history, using existing facilities such as Wimbledon for tennis and the River Thames and The Serpentine for rowing events.

The students also had an opportunity to meet with a variety of marketing and advertising firms with major responsibilities related to the Olympics. McCann Erikson is the advertising agency that coordinated some 40,000 design briefs related to the marketing, communications, promotion, broadcast media, and social media for the 2012 Olympic Games. Agency representative Sam Lewis explained the process of adapting Olympic advertising and marketing for different countries and cultures as well as how the logos and mascots were developed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Wasserman Media Group’s Senior Manager Katie Bynum shared information about their business' representation of a variety of Olympic athletes and corporate sponsors. She introduced students to the business side of being an athlete, including contract negotiation with owners, sponsorship contracts with advertisers and the other special business needs of top athletes. Simon Palethorpe, Managing Director for ATG Ticketing discussed the impact on bookings and related tourist activities caused by the Olympic events and walked students through the database and software system capabilities and their interaction with the local and international Olympic organizations.

At the debriefing session back in Toledo, one of the MBA students, Terah Jude, described the experience as ". . . an incredible opportunity to engage the business dimensions of an event that you normally associate only with sport. It was a great way to integrate the theory and content from our coursework during the MBA program."

Applications are currently being accepted for Lourdes’ fall 2012 MBA cohort. “We are exploring Korea as the 2013 international immersion experience,” notes Dr. Ludwig. “Korea offers our students the opportunity to learn more about an exciting and rapidly evolving Asian market.” To learn more about Lourdes’ MBA program, visit www.lourdes.edu/mba.
<trackback:ping />

Lourdes’ Upward Bound program receives 100% funding support

This summer, more than 50 students from Waite and Woodward High Schools will call Lourdes University home, as they participate in the institution’s Upward Bound program. Lourdes is among 642 institutions nationwide to be included in the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The Honor Roll selects institutions based on a series of factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to long-term campus-community partnerships, and measurable community outcomes as a result of the service. Lourdes University was selected based on three of its many community service and service learning initiatives:

Community Focused Clinicals:
Lourdes University’ College of Nursing offers community focused clinicals, providing professional experience for nursing students in settings such as area homeless shelters, community centers for the mentally ill and subsidized housing facilities for those with disabilities. Nursing students using both traditional and non-traditional methods for serving these populations – for example, students encouraged clients with mental illness to share their life experiences by sewing, gardening and performing other crafts together. More than 198 Lourdes students have participated in these clinicals, serving over 350 individuals.

Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break:
For 16 years, L.I.N.K. (Lourdes’ Campus Ministry student organization) has organized, recruited members and raised funds for an alternative spring break project with Habitat for Humanity. To date, Lourdes Habitat for Humanity team has assisted homeowners in 7 states and 15 cities – rehabbing houses, building homes and bringing the spirit of volunteerism and Franciscan values to those in need.

Jones Middle School Partnership:
A group of 29 Lourdes students tutored more than 160 students in Jones Middle School – an inner-city school located in Toledo, OH. At Jones, only 33% of sixth graders meet minimum state acceptance rates in reading proficiency. As part of the partnership, Lourdes students worked with Jones students to improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills.

“This is a marvelous recognition of just some of the many service activities happening in and out of the classroom at Lourdes,” reflects Sister Ann Carmen Barone, OSF, Vice President for Mission & Ministry. “As Director of Campus Ministry & Service Learning, Sister Barbara Vano has worked tirelessly with Lourdes’ faculty and staff to shape and encourage the growth of these programs. We are extremely thankful for her and our entire Lourdes Community’s dedication to serving others.”

“Through service, these institutions are creating the next generation of leaders by challenging students to tackle tough issues and create positive impacts in the community,” said Robert Velasco, Acting CEO of CNCS. “We applaud Lourdes University for its commitment to making service a priority in and out of the classroom.Together, service and learning increase civic engagement while fostering social innovation among students, empowering them to solve challenges within their communities.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Barack Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve. This nationwide, two-year program is housed through NASA’s Climate Days initiative, aimed at encouraging schools and communities to raise awareness of climate change in order to improve the climate literacy in the United States.

Last month, the 20 individuals chosen to be part of the Earth Ambassador Program attended a training workshop at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. During the workshop, ambassadors interacted with Earth scientists studying the effects of climate change with respect to their research areas, learned effective ways of communicating global climate change with the public and become familiar with the online resources available to host their own events at their local institutions.

“Even though NASA chose a small group to represent its first Earth Ambassador program, we are very diverse,” shares Dr. Megeath. “From astronomy to 4-H to the study of ice – our Earth Ambassadors possess a wealth of information and resources for promoting environmentalism and sustainability. I’m looking forward to building strong relationships with each ambassador as we assist NASA with their Climate Days initiative.”
Earth Ambassadors are charged with a commitment to support a series of nation-wide NASA Climate Day events hosted at their individual institutions. Dr. Megeath is currently in the planning stages of the NASA Climate Day event to be hosted at Lourdes University in 2012.

Dr. Megeath earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Colgate University in New York and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts.
