Day 1 – Monday, March 5 Recap

Posted by: mission on 3/6/2012

Habitat Team with KimberlyToday was awesome!  We worked on two houses today. Kimberly, one of the home owners, worked alongside us as we dug holes for trees and flower beds, put up trim and siding, and reinforced doorways and windows.  Lorenzo and Danny (our team leaders) were patient in teaching us how to properly operate power tools.

A fantastic homemade lunch of tacos, Mexican rice, and walking tacos was provided by one of the generous homeowners.  There are a few blisters and a couple of minor sunburns; Tony had a mishap with a full wheelbarrow and a ladder :) but everyone is in great shape!

After leaving the work site, we drove through downtown Laredo. We were a little worried in Tim's van when we somehow ended up in a traffic lane to cross into Mexico... No worries, we stayed on this side of the border. We stopped at San Agustin Cathedral, the oldest church in Laredo. Interesting tidbit - before the founding of this Catholic church in Laredo in 1760, residents relied upon Franciscan priests that traveled to Laredo for their spiritual care.  Our Franciscan roots are everywhere - even deep in the heart of Texas :)

Back at United Baptist Church (they are allowing us to use their facilities while we are here), Alisa and Laurie brought the gang some awesome barbecue!  We had the works - pulled pork, smoked brisket, and turkey with cole slaw, baked beans, and all the trimmings. We will definitely sleep well after a hard day of work and a delicious, hearty meal!

We are all so excited to get back to the work site tomorrow!  It really is an awesome way to spend our Spring Break by helping to build homes for some amazing families who would not be able to afford them otherwise!
