Coming on this trip I did not know what to expect but I was just going on the ride. The flight was good excepted for some parts because I have a fear of heights, but I did fly before and I knew what may happen. The first day on the site I was amazed that they made houses for other people. I learned that giving back to a community is important and no matter if it’s not your community because everyone needs help with something. Also it helped me to be more thankful for the things I have because not everyone is as fortunate as me. Overall, I love the experience with everyone on the trip. It was amazing. I also like the people who are at the site. Finally, I like the fellowship we had playing games and being a part of the team!
This trip has been an amazing experience for me. I have learned a lot about myself. Coming on this trip I was fearful that I may not be able to help others with my lack of building experience. People have been so gracious and helped me to learn the skills that help others. Using the nail gun was by far one of my favorite experiences. I have loved getting to know people that I normally may not have had the opportunity to hang out with at school. Learning some of the culture here has been very eye opening to me and has helped this trip be even more rewarding. The County Commissioner of Laredo came to visit our worksite and she baked sweet bread for us. She was really kind and sweet and it gave us a look into the sense of community Laredo truly has. Building these houses has been a wonderful experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. PS: I love DD J
The hard work we put in preparing for Habitat was well worth it for the end result of, not one but two, beautiful homes for families of Laredo, Texas. The first day on the job site I was assigned the task of measuring and cutting siding for one of the houses. I was excited to be using the circular saw, since I don’t often have the chance to use power tools in my everyday life! Seeing the siding be completed on several sides of the building, and seeing our hard work being accomplished, was extremely gratifying. Since the first day we arrived I have been amazed by how friendly and welcoming the community of Laredo has been towards our team, providing authentic Texan lunches for us every day, a place to stay, and taking interest in our journey here. Working for the Laredo Habitat group has made me even more grateful for the things I have, and humbles me that I am able to make a difference in someone else’s life by providing affordable housing. I’m so glad I could take a part in it.
This trip thus far has been amazing! Everyone on the trip has been really friendly and we have become a close group. I love that most of the people here in Texas are very welcoming. They don’t hesitate to say Hi to us and tell us that they are excited for us to be here. So far on the work site I have been a part of building a sweet looking shed. It may take us all week, but we are determined to finish it and finish it right! My favorite part has been using the gun that shoots nails into concrete and being able to see how much progress we have done. Every day for lunch we are given an amazing Mexican spread that was generously made by volunteer woman of the Habitat community. Overall, I think this is a great experience of helping people and knowing I am doing something good in the community and I am very proud of everyone on this trip.
Being able to participate in the Habitat trip this year has been a great experience for me. I was not originally going to be coming but I am so glad that I was able to. So far this week I have been able to put most of the siding on one of the two beautiful homes we are building. I have met so many great people, not only from Lourdes but also through habitat. We have been embraced by the community and they have done so much for us. Being able to help on these houses has been one of the greatest blessings.
