Alabama Team Learns Building, Communication Skills

Today was our first day of working at the site for Habitat. We were privileged enough to meet the homeowner and work alongside her while building her house. She is a woman in her 60s who will be living alone and was very lively and grateful for the work that we do.

Crooked Boards, Flying Nails Overcome On Day 1

This Habitat trip is my first time ever being part of Habitat team and the first time I have ever been in Tennessee. Today was the first day on the job site even though we have been here for two days already. These past few days that we have been here have been the best ever. The weather is perfect with NO snow and the sun is shining.

Thoreau-ly inspired hiking in the Smokies

Our second day was a mix of environmental exploration and fifteen-seat passenger van-induced group bonding. Our group split up and either attended the sermon at the Baptist church where we are staying, or a Catholic service a short drive away. I personally enjoyed having a Sunday before we start the actual building project to drive home the theme of service that surrounds our entire trip.

Fitting the pieces together in Tennessee

Today some of us attended church service at Victory Baptist Church. We were welcomed with open arms into the service; many people came up to us, shook our hands and introduced themselves, and thanked us for helping their community. Before the service started, we were offered coffee, hot chocolate, or tea by the members of the congregation. During the service, many of us were moved by a quote that the preacher said, it went a little something like this:

How to Make Friends and Influence Restaurant Choices

Well, we made it safe and sound to Maryville, TN! Let me tell you, the view on the way in was incredible. I have definitely been through these states before, but I must have been snoozing the whole time, because I never knew how beautiful Kentucky and Tennessee actually were.

Habitat Volunteers Visit Churches, Smokies, Gatlinburg

We made it to Tennessee! What an awesome area down here. After the cold weather we left in Ohio, the 60s and sunshine today felt great! We are staying at Victory Baptist Church in Maryville for the week and the pastor and his wife were very welcoming when we arrived this afternoon.

Alabama Crew Checks In From the Road

After traveling 9 hours we landed at our destination for the evening: Columbia, TN. We will finish the drive to Prattville, AL on Sunday. The drive was beautiful and the weather is gorgeous. We had forgotten what grass looks like!
