In addition to our exceptional bachelor and master degree programs, the Lourdes University College of Nursing offers you a quality ORFA course of study with dedicated faculty and staff to assist you. The purpose of the course is to provide education preparation for RN's or Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) to perform in the operating room as a First Assistant.

To qualify, students must possess a current RN license with CNOR attained prior to the end of the course, or Certified Surgical Technologist; have two years of operating room experience; obtain work experience verification and guaranteed 120 hours of practicum experience; and hold a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) card.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Two semester program approved by the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) Courses being offered include: NUR 470-Operating Room Assistant I Fall semester –three credit hours provides didactic instruction based on AORN Core Curriculum as well as knot tying and various suturing techniques. NUR 471 Operating Room Assistant II Spring Semester provides practical experience to perform as an ORFA intern. The student will complete 120 hours under the supervision of a licensed physician at the student's place of employment.
  • Hands-on laboratory instruction
  • A letter of support from the employer granting 120 hours of clinical support with a physician mentor is required to assist with the clinical experiences for the First Assistant intern
  • Case management classroom instruction and student case-study presentations
  • Provides qualifying RN's and CST's the education required to sit for the Certified First Assistant examination. For the Advanced Nurse Practitioner to be eligible to sit for the CRNFA exam, the student will need to complete an RNFA Program; log in 2000 hours of first assisting by an mentoring, licensed physician; and be certified by a nationally recognized program. This certification is in lieu of the CNOR certification.
