Letter from the President
The academic year is now in full swing. It has been a pleasure to meet so many students and learn not only their goals but also what they appreciate most about Lourdes. Often their response is our excellent liberal arts education that encourages them to use their imagination and engage in thought-provoking dialogue with their professors and fellow classmates. Lourdes' campus life experience also receives high marks with fun activities, student organization events, athletic games, and day trips.
Lourdes faculty members have once again enhanced academic offerings. One class is preparing to travel in spring semester to Lesotho, Africa, where the students will work with the Basotho people, learn their culture and help provide HIV/AIDS education to this impoverished sovereign country that is landlocked by South Africa.
Education faculty is finalizing plans to allow Lourdes students to fulfill some of their student teaching coursework in Brazil. Other study-abroad opportunities already in place include opportunities in Tullycross, Ireland, and non-credit art courses in Florence, Italy.
I invite you to encourage your student to learn more about these and other academic and student life opportunities. It is our goal to provide your student with the best college experience possible. Lourdes' faculty, staff and administration count on your student and you to share with us your suggestions on how we might make Lourdes University better, and to tell us when we've done a good job.
Please remind your student that Spring Semester registration begins on Monday, October 7. He or she may also want to take advantage of our January or "J" session that runs from January 6-17, 2014. This accelerated session allows your student to take 1 course to lighten his or her Spring Semester load and aid in completing his or her degree in four years.
As a parent, please know you are a valuable member of our Lourdes Community. You may access the Lourdes Parent Network at www.lourdes.edu/parents for helpful resources. In addition, if your student is a freshman, please review the First Year Experience (FYE) program information at www.lourdes.edu/fye.
On behalf of the Lourdes University Community, I look forward to continuing to support your student in achieving his or her educational goals.
David J. Livingston, Ph.D.
