Message from the Dean

Deb SchwartzAs a Lourdes University graduate student, you’ve made an important commitment to yourself and the future, a commitment that can transform your life, the lives of people you come in contact with everyday, and our future global society.

A master’s degree can be an avenue to career advancement and increased earnings over your lifetime.  National data support this claim, and our experience in the Graduate School suggests that advancement or career changes and the possibility of increased earnings are an outcome of master’s degree attainment at Lourdes University.

However, Lourdes graduate programs offer so much more than professional training or career opportunities.  Your graduate education can open doors to other kinds of new possibilities:  new questions and new ways of thinking, new problems and new ways to solve problems, heightened awareness, understanding of diverse perspectives, and the creation of new knowledge.  At Lourdes, you will acquire and use specialized knowledge in your area of study; improve your communication, analytic inquiry and information fluency skills; develop a personal and professional ethic consistent with the Franciscan values of learning, reverence, and service; develop a commitment to social responsibility; become a lifelong learner; and integrate knowledge by becoming engaged in scholarly activities.  This kind of learning can lead to greater participation in civic activities, support for education, leadership, productivity, and innovation – all factors that impact the quality of life.

I congratulate you for intentionally choosing education and thereby simultaneously investing in yourself and contributing to the public good.  I challenge you to make the most of your education and the resources available to you as Lourdes University graduate students.  And I wish you every success as you explore new learning opportunities.

Deborah R. Schwartz, PhD
Dean, Graduate School
