Evacuation Procedures

Persons with disabilities should evacuate the building in an emergency situation, if possible. Remember that individuals with similar disabilities are unique.

Evacuation Procedures

Following is the Lourdes emergency evacuation procedure for students with disabilities.

Students registering with Accessibility Services will be given a copy of the evacuation procedures and will be notified of any revisions in this policy. Additionally, the faculty/staff will have a copy of these procedures in their handbook.

On the first day of class, faculty members should ask for two student volunteers, one being primary and the other contingent, to assist in the event of an emergency. A brief meeting should take place between the volunteers and the student to discuss the uniqueness of their disability as soon as possible.

Persons with disabilities should evacuate the building in an emergency situation, if possible. Remember that individuals with similar disabilities are unique. Through brief communication and asking questions, evacuation can be quick and safe. Always ask the individual how you can help before attempting any rescue technique or giving assistance. Those with mobility impairments that cannot negotiate the stairs with assistance may remain in a building during an emergency situation. Elevators shall NOT be used if there is a fire. The Sylvania Fire Department personnel will determine whether or not the circumstances warrant an evacuation.

Evacuation Procedures

  • Faculty will be responsible for students with disabilities. If more than one disabled student is in the class the faculty will ask for an assistant.
  • Faculty or an assistant appointed by a faculty member, in the case of a fire, will assist the individual with a mobility disability to a room farthest from the fire and shut the door.
  • Faculty will immediately notify the rescue squad of the location of the student who was unable to exit the building.
  • If a person is visually impaired, the faculty member will escort the person out of the building.
  • If a person is hearing impaired, the faculty member will make sure that the person knows that there is an emergency and that they follow everyone out of the building.
