Sociology students help out La Posada

Assistant Professor of Sociology Sharon Everhardt, PhD, and a group of sociology students volunteered their time and service at the La Posada family emergency shelter in Toledo.  The crew painted three bedrooms and raised $300 to purchase bed linen, curtains, lamps, and accents for each room. They also hosted a teddy bear drive so that families in the shelter will be able to provide teddy bears to their children. Of the funds raised, LINK and Mission & Ministry were a large source of funds and fundraising efforts.

Village Day goes zero waste

Each year on October 4, the Sylvania Franciscan Village gathers to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. This year’s Sylvania Franciscan Village Day included a mass in Queen of Peace Chapel, an award-winning documentary on climate change, and a zero waste lunch. The luncheon was a great success and generated less than a pound of waste.

FYE students part of Tent City

It was wet and cold outside, but students braved the weather to be a part of the 2012 Tent City, held in downtown Toledo. A group of First Year Experience students volunteered to be a part of the project, which asks participants to sleep over night in tents, giving a taste of what life is like to be homeless. Students also spent time with the homeless of Toledo.

This May – Win a Puerto Rican Getaway!

After spending the winter months shoveling snow, driving on icy roads, and bundling up from head to toe, wouldn’t it be amazing to get away to an island lined with warm, sandy beaches? Through the Gray Wolves Puerto Rico Getaway Contest, hosted by the Lourdes Athletics Department, one lucky participant will win a 4-night trip to this tropical U.S. Commonwealth!

Patrick Magat, a Lourdes student and member of the baseball team, grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico and shares, “Old San Juan is one of the most popular touristic sights in all of Puerto Rico. Here, people can witness ‘El Morro’ which was built to hold and protect against invaders. The night life is one of the most explored throughout the island and people can also visit the Governor's house. Our culture is unique and we are very proud of it. We have our festivities, our music and our food. Puerto Ricans love to have fun!”

Known to some as Borinquen, “Land of the Valiant Lord,” and “The Land of Enchantment,” there is no doubt that Puerto Rico is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture. Discover all that Puerto Rico has to offer in the island’s tourism video below:
