Alumna:
Michelle Thornton
Class of 2012
Bachelor of Arts degree – social work

In her work at Harbor House, Michelle manages the household and assigns weekend hours. "Our goals are steadfast – helping our guests sustain their recovery, gain self-esteem, self-sufficiency, permanent housing, their place in society as productive, working members and the opportunity to be reunited with their children."

Having worked in the social work profession for some time, Michelle maintains one of the obstacles she faces is removing herself from the equation and keeping God as the integral focus. "Because I have lived the same life as some of the guests I have assisted over the years, I believe that God will bring them out as He has done for me.

"Although it may not be difficult for me, in all reality for some it can be a challenge living and maintaining a life lived with and for God."

"Harbor House management and employees want to empower our guests to reclaim their lives through a comprehensive program of structured transitional housing, life skills training and education, counseling and referrals to collaborative agencies."

Michelle is grateful to Lourdes University for providing her with a solid liberal arts education. "My ultimate dream position is to become a geriatric care manager and to advocate for these individuals. It is imperative they do not have to choose between getting their medication or their food for the month but to receive both.

"Lourdes is amazing in their community connections, outreach and unlimited care for people. They further encouraged me to continue to care for people, the way they continue to care for their students." There is no doubt that this talented and inspirational individual will achieve her goals and motivate others to follow suit.
