Church Authority and Ecumenism: Obstacle or Opportunity? Sunday, March 25 3 p.m. Franciscan Center of Lourdes University Free & open to the public
In his encyclical on ecumenism, the late Pope John Paul II admitted that the papacy, which Catholics see as an instrument of unity, had become for many an obstacle to Christian unity. What the pope said of the papacy could be said as well of Catholic understandings of church authority in general. In this presentation, Dr. Gaillardetz will explore the deeper issues underlying questions of church authority in ecumenical dialogue and will propose some practical measures that might advance ecumenical conversation on the topic.
Dr. Gaillardetz currently holds the Joseph McCarthy Chair in Systematic Theology at Boston College. For 10 years he was the Margaret and Thomas Murray and James J. Bacik Professor of Catholic Studies at The University of Toledo. He received his Ph.D. in systematic theology from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Gaillardetz has published over 80 articles and has authored 8 books. In 2000 he received the Sophia Award from the faculty of the Washington Theological Union in recognition of “theological excellence in service to ministry.” He was an official delegate on the U.S. Catholic—Methodist Ecumenical Dialogue from 2001 to 2005. He is married to Diana and they are the parents of four boys.
