On Friday, April 26, the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University was aglow with more than 500 guests who came out to celebrate higher education and to raise funds for student scholarships. The event was hosted by Honorary Chairs John and Sarah Bates and Lourdes President David Livingston, PhD, and wife Joan, who welcomed guests as they arrived.
Guests were treated to a unique silent auction that featured 127 items including: a 3-month Mercedes convertible lease donated by Vin Devers Autohaus of Sylvania, a $1,000 gift card donated by Jaffe Jewelers, an exquisite lot of French wine donated by Bob and Sue Savage, flowers for a year donated by Hafner Florist, and many other distinctive entries. As they browsed the silent auction, guests enjoyed cocktails and grazing stations that included such delicacies as crab cakes, bacon-wrapped chicken with grape barbeque glaze, and warm hot-smoked salmon.
The entertainment program began promptly at 8 p.m. with Lourdes alumna, Chrys Peterson, emceeing. Performing this year were the Toledo Opera, the Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Ballet. Timothy Shew was the special out-of-town guest, performing Broadway favorites such as “Somethin’s Comin” by composer Leonard Bernstein and “Can’t Take That Away From Me” by George and Ira Gershwin. Institutional Advancement Vice President Mary Arquette gave a moving tribute to longtime friend, Jim Findlay, who passed away last fall, and Timothy sang “Bring Him Home” by composer Claude-Michel Schöenberg, in Mr. Findlay’s honor.
Caroline “Callie” Bunch, a senior majoring in psychology, served as Lourdes’ student speaker for the program. Callie offered thanks and appreciation to guests whose generous support has helped students like her complete their education. In her heartfelt address, she stated, “Representing Lourdes student scholarship recipients, I say thank you to all of you who truly care about us, our education and our dreams. We could not do it without you.”
