Position at Lourdes: Director of Academic Advising

Where you went to college: Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH) – Undergraduate and Master's; University of Toledo – PhD

What you majored in: History and Political Science (BA), Management (Master's), Education (PhD). LOTS of different interests!

Favorite book or music type, group or movie (or all of the above): I'm a child of the 80s, so this explains my answers! Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club and Back to the Future I and II (NOT III) are superb movies. I listen to a very wide variety of music: Christian/Worship, 80s (Michael Jackson; Genesis; Bee Gees), country, and lots of other things in between.

Interest outside of work: I volunteer at our church (Westgate Chapel) in the media/tech area, and my wife and I are very committed to animal adoption efforts — we give our time and treasure to a charity called Paws and Whiskers in central Toledo. Other than that, I like to visit family and friends around Ohio and go to as many sporting events as I can.

What you wish someone had told you when you were a first-year college student: Never be afraid to ask questions; you likely have a lot of friends that have the same questions but are afraid to ask! Interest outside of work: I like to do anything outside! I also enjoy traveling with my husband and relaxing on the lake with friends.

What you wish someone had told you when you were a first-year college student: I wish someone would have told me to be more open to getting involved in student clubs/organizations and intramural sports. I think this would have allowed me to meet more diverse people; I tended to be pretty shy and so my circle of friends was small. The beauty of college is that it is not high school; you can branch out, recreate yourself and be the person you always wanted to be!

Jennifer Lenkay

Jennifer Lenkay

Position at Lourdes: Assistant Professor College of Nursing

Where you went to college: BSN from The University of Toledo/Medical College of Ohio (now known as The University of Toledo Medical Center); MSN from the Medical University of Ohio (now known as The University of Toledo Medical Center)

In your first-year of college what did you think your future career would be: I have always wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. I started out majoring in pharmacy because my high school guidance counselor told me there would be a shortage of jobs in nursing by the time I graduated from college. After my first year in college, I decided I did not want to be a pharmacist. I met with my college advisor to discuss my future career options. I told her I always wanted to be a nurse and I told her about my high school guidance counselor. Well much to my delight, there was a predicted nursing shortage by the time I would graduate. So I switched my major to nursing and graduated in five years with my BSN. In the beginning, I would have predicted that I would have wanted to work in obstetrics or pediatrics. I ended up becoming a cardiac nurse for many years and then ultimately teaching nursing. Those are definitely two areas that were not on my radar screen as I started college.

Favorite book or music type, group or movie (or all of the above): I would say one of my favorite books is The Help, one of my favorite movies is The Shawshank Redemption and I like to listen to pop music, Christian music, disco/80s music, a little bit of country music. One of my guilty pleasures is reality TV such as Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, First 48 and Lock Up.

Interest outside of work: I love to cook! I love to eat! I am passionate about feeding my family clean and healthy food. I make my own bread from scratch using organic ingredients and grind my own flour. I am a wife to a wonderful husband Joe and mother of two beautiful daughters: Maddie is 10 and Katie is 7. I was raised Jewish and I am married to a Catholic man. We are raising our girls Catholic and they go to St. Joseph School in Sylvania. I will be going through the RCIA program at St. Joseph Parish in Sylvania this fall. I would like to learn more about my family's faith. I do not know yet if this experience will end in my converting from Judaism to Catholicism. I am open and excited about this new journey I will be taking with my faith.

What you wish someone had told you when you were a first-year college student: I wish that someone would have told me in my first year of college that hours of studying does not always equal a good grade. In other words, it's not always the amount of hours you study that equals good grades it is HOW you study that equals good grades. You need to know what type of learner you are, develop study skills that support that learning style, and spend the correct amount of time studying the right information! Then you are more likely to earn a good grade.
