Awards Ceremony 2020 image

Lourdes University is pleased to present the 2020 Lourdes Awards.

The 2020 Lourdes Awards are complete!

Beginning April 15, Lourdes shared a few award winners each day via social media and this web page (www.lourdes.edu/awards). While the Lourdes community would have preferred to have an in-person Awards Ceremony Event and Athletic Awards Banquet, we are excited to have provided a fun two-week online reveal of this year’s award winners.

Congratulations to the 2020 Lourdes Award winners in academics, student life, mission and ministry, athletics and more!

The medal is named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a third-century woman renowned for her love of learning. Tradition tells us that she was martyred because of her outspoken resistance to the persecution of Christians by the emperor Maxentius. She is honored as the patroness of philosophers and of Kappa Gamma Pi.

“Throughout her time here, Shannon has truly exemplified what it means to be a member of the Lourdes community. Her academic achievements, her desire to embrace all individuals, and  her passion to extend our Franciscan values into the broader community make her the ideal candidate.“

SERVICE LEARNING AWARDS

San Damiano Faculty Service Learning Award

Susan Shelangoskie

Presenter: Sister Barbara Vano, OSF, Acting Vice President of Mission & Ministry

The San Damiano Faculty Service Learning Award recognizes faculty, who in the spirit of Francis of Assisi have inspired students to rebuild their local communities through a commitment to service within the context of their academic discipline. Long before students head out into the community, faculty members spend hours connecting the project to course work.

Dr. Susan Shelangoskie was instrumental in creating a service learning project that allowed ENG 353 Introduction to Digital and Media Studies students to work with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library Local History and Genealogy department this spring to research and create a digital exhibit from items in their architecture collection. She began working with John Dewees from the library last summer to design this exceptional service learning project.

The Canticle of Praise Student Service Learning Award celebrates students who, in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, have used a service learning experience to acknowledge and reflect the goodness and compassion of God.

Students enrolled in the ENG 353: Introduction to Digital and Media Studies class have been working with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library Local History and Genealogy department to research and create a digital exhibit from items in their architecture collection that they have digitized but have not had time to process. Each student “adopted” 2 properties/sets of drawings to research. The class has finished the digital exhibit that eventually will be incorporated into the Library’s site. View the exhibit.

The project allows students to apply what they have been learning in the class. First, they reconceptualized what data is when talking about text and images as data; then discussed and practiced database design: what is metadata, why consistent data entry is important, how to index a dataset, etc. This project allows students to put into practice all the things they learned. John Dewees from the library has been working with Dr. Susan Shelangoskie since last summer to design this project, and he has continued to act as a consultant during Zoom meetings since the class switched to online learning.
