"The best part of working in the field of international education is the relationships you build," offers Area Coordinator Kristian Fanene Schmidt. A Fulbright New Zealand General Graduate Award recipient, Kristian spent the past academic year comparing university support services targeted at Black and Latino students in the United States with that of Pacific and Mayori students in New Zealand.
How can an art course benefit a social work major? At Lourdes, "It can change a student's life or even improve our world." These words spoken by social work senior Louis Wilson encapsulates the community-minded spirit of Lourdes students and the benefit of a liberal arts education.
Students and alumni at Lourdes University are using the creative process of making art to improve and enhance the physical and emotional well-being of others. Since its inception in 2002, Lourdes' Pre-Art Therapy program has helped the Department of Art double its enrollment and has also given students a new career option as they prepare for graduate programs in art therapy or art therapy and counseling.

"The Franciscan experience has always been about relationships," notes Sr. Ann Carmen. "In the Sacrum Commercium, or Sacred Exchange, Lady Poverty asks Francis where he and his brothers (friars or companions) live. He answers without hesitation that the world is their cloister, their home. That continues to be true for the nearly million women and men who belong to the Franciscan family.
Duns Scotus Library is my favorite place on the Lourdes University campus. The architectural jewel of that space is the Great Window in the west wall of the Library.
Last fall, Lourdes implemented a new institution-wide initiative requiring students seeking a Bachelor's degree to complete 20 hours of service learning, and students seeking an Associate's degree to complete 10 hours.
Comprised of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, and its sponsored ministries Lourdes University and Sylvania Franciscan Health, employees of SFV helped local junior high students understand a valuable lesson – in history and in life.
