LeeRoy Wells Jr., ‘07

My goals are very simple. To accomplish my purpose and God-given destiny and leave a legacy for my children and their children.”

Motivated by his faith, LeeRoy Wells Jr. is fulfilling his goals. As Senior Vice President of Operations for Consumers Energy, the primary subsidiary of CMS Energy, he is responsible for the delivery of energy to 6.8 million Michigan customers. He and the 4,500+ employees under his leadership are dedicated to delivering energy that is clean, affordable, reliable and safe.

Education & Career

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Michigan Technological University, LeeRoy worked as a Resident Engineer before joining Consumers Energy. Over the next decade, he moved upward to his current position. He credits the support of his family, including wife Monique and their children for being the key to his success.

Having already begun a successful career at the Fortune 500 company, LeeRoy chose to enroll in the Lourdes graduate program to expand his capabilities as a leader and understand more deeply how to move organizations forward. “I loved the cohort style of learning. It allowed me to develop deep friendships with my peers. The real-life application was really attractive to me and I loved the relationships we had with the faculty.”

A lifelong learner, he has furthered his education since Lourdes earning a master’s certificate in project management from The George Washington University School of Business and a certificate in business acumen for high-potential executives at the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Establishing a Legacy

Dedicated to future generations, LeeRoy volunteers with FIRST Robotics, a global community that prepares young people for the future and is the world’s leading youth-serving nonprofit advancing STEM education. “As Consumers Energy’s executive sponsor and a board member of FIRST Robotics Michigan, I enjoy volunteering in their efforts and initiatives!”

LeeRoy works tirelessly to celebrate co-workers’ differences and similarities, helping himself and others gain a better understanding of one another through his commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I). Consumers Energy sees DE&I as a “movement,” rather than a “moment” in time. “I strive to take time to learn more about others and realize their unique perspectives and viewpoints, as it’s part of our journey to fully embed DE&I throughout the company.”

An accomplished leader, LeeRoy enjoys his job. “It’s a very exciting time to be in the utility industry. It’s really going through a transformation. As we continue to evolve, there’s newer cleaner technology that’s out there. We’re taking a stand for our environment so that we leave it better than we found it for our kids and grandkids.”Photo of alumna LeeRoy Wells Jr. inside Consumers Energy headquarters posing in front of mural depicting a person holding a hard hat in the field.
