Constitution Day Celebration
September 15

What is Constitution Day?
Each year, Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. While Independence Day and Presidents’ Day had long been established as holidays, the concept of Constitution Day took root much later, beginning to sprout in 1940. Initially, “I am an American Day” was observed on the third Sunday of May, celebrating American citizenship. This observance swiftly gained widespread popularity throughout the United States. In the 1950s, the date was shifted to September 17 to align more closely with the historical origins of American citizenship, and the holiday was simplified to “Citizenship Day.”
